No video game can ever be considered perfect, especially when modern titles are so vast and ambitious that even the designers themselves struggle to iron out issues months after launch. Thankfully, with – a title which has its fair share of bugs and balancing issues – it’s possible to enable user-generated mods which fix problems, introduce new gameplay mechanics and even offer fresh weapons. We’ve compiled 15 essential mods you’ll want to try out below. Best Fallout 4 Mods: Beast WhispererSure, human companions in Fallout 4 are entertaining to a point, but when you’ve been foraging around the wasteland for months with all of survival hope slowly diminishing, the last thing you really want is someone else moaning about how much their feet hurt or how hungry they are.Related:The answer?
Recruit some animals to be your buddies! This mod grants access to the Beast Whisperer collar, which can be placed on the creatures you capture in cages to turn them into faithful pals.
Fancy some four-legged friendship? This is the mod for you.Best Fallout 4 Mods: Armorsmith ExtendedThe armour system in Fallout 4 is pretty great, allowing you to equip all manner of outfits to give yourself a better chance of survival out there in the wilderness. However, there’s room for improvement – and Armorsmith Extended has improvements in spades.Related:The change that really matters is the fact that you can now wear outfits underneath suits of armour, allowing you to show off your sense of style even when you’re suited, booted and ready for combat.
You can also wear a bandana or gas mask with any helmet that doesn’t totally cover your face. There’s plenty of other good stuff here, but the fact that you can now customize your appearance an entirely different level makes this an essential mod for seasoned Fallout 4 players.Best Fallout 4 Mods: Lowered WeaponsVery much like running with scissors, it’s not wise to dash around with a gun pointing forwards all the time. Sure, you’re ready to tackle any oncoming foe, but it’s not particularly realistic or safe – and therein lies the focus of the Lowered Weapons mod. This simple change forces your character to lower their weapon when not firing it, which makes the whole experience that little bit more immersive.Best Fallout 4 Mods: Eyes of BeautyThe character models in Fallout 4 are full of rich detail and unnervingly realistic, but there’s one element which doesn’t quite sit right with us – those eyes. They’re not awful as such, but they could certainly be a lot better – hence the Eyes of Beauty mod.You can customize your character’s eyeballs to make them more detailed, striking and lifelike; some of the textures are taken from actual medical picture repositories, and with a 512×512 resolution, they offer twice the detail of Fallout 4’s standard eyes.Best Fallout 4 Mods: Bullet TimeFallout 4’s V.A.T.S.
Mechanic is great, and allows you to target various limbs on enemies for precise damage. However, if you feel that it removes too much control, you can install this mod which slows down time when you’re shooting, but calls for a little more skill than V.A.T.S. While you might assume this turns the game into a Matrix-style snorefest, it actually ramps up the challenge as you have to be much more precise with your aim. It also ironically makes things feel more face-paced, as you don’t have V.A.T.S. Kicking in all the time.Best Fallout 4 Mods – The unofficial patchFallout 4 is a beast in terms of scope, and taking this into account it’s easy to cut Bethesda a little slack in relation to the many bugs that litter the wasteland – and we’re not talking about those hidden under tiny rocks, either. The developer is constantly improving and refining the experience, but a team of fans have taken it upon themselves to go the extra mile and clean up the game independently. The unofficial patch fixes hundreds of gameplay, quest, NPC, object, item, text and placement bugs and is one of the first mods you should install. While it doesn’t add any new content, it makes the whole experience more pleasurable.Best Fallout 4 Mods – Take CoverFallout 4’s cover system is radically improved when compared to previous entries in the series, but still leaves a lot to be desired when compared to others in the genre.Related:This mod aims to rectify that by offering a raft of improvements, including a third-person camera so you can judge your surroundings better, and a lean-and-shoot option plus the ability to quickly vault over cover to place yourself in a better tactical position.
You can also edit how your character enters cover to get more control over the process.Best Fallout 4 Mods – Deckard’s CoatThis cosmetic mod will allow you to indulge in all of your Blade Running fantasies. Enable it and you’ll feel like you’re skulking the rain-soaked streets of Los Angeles tracking down rogue replicants.
OK, so that might not actually be true, but by golly you’ll look amazing on your wasteland explorations (Rutger Hauer poetry sadly not included).Best Fallout 4 Mods – Better SettlersBuilding settlements is a big part of Fallout 4, and once you’ve done this you’re bound to attract settlers. If you’re bored of staring at the same generic faces all the time then this mod will allow you to introduce some much-needed variety. Better Settlers not only makes your townsfolk more varied, but it also equips them with better gear and makes them more effective at withstanding assaults. That means your settlement should be a more secure place to live, too.Best Fallout 4 Mods – Doom on your Pip-BoyYour Pip-Boy isn’t just a handy tool for staying alive – it can run classic games to keep you occupied during down time. This mod takes things to the next level by offering a scaled-down version of Doom.
It’s still in the very early stages so don’t expect much, but it’s a perfect example of how inventive these mods can get.Best Fallout 4 Mods – See-Through ScopesThe use of weapon scopes in Fallout 4 is, by default, a bit rubbish, so we’re thankful that a mod exists which makes the process appear more realistic.Related:With this mod enabled, when you use your scope you’ll be presented with a cool animation of it being raised to your eye, and you also benefit from peripheral vision during the aiming process. This is the perfect example of how user-made mods can iron out some of Fallout 4’s weaknesses.Best Fallout 4 Mods – CampsiteThe wasteland is a pretty hostile and unforgiving place, so it’s little wonder that Fallout 4 encourages you to seek proper, solid shelter before taking a few hours of shut-eye.
However, if you’re feeling really adventurous then you can enable this mod and camp anywhere in the game. The mod allows you to erect a tent, build a campfire and use sleeping bags to rest in. You can even cook food on the fire.Best Fallout 4 Mods – Be The DogOne of the more amusing mods, the title of this one should be self-explanatory. Instead of venturing through the game on two legs, you can assume the role of a dog – either the famous Dogmeat or another canine character.Related:You still get the trusty Pip-Boy – strapped rather awkwardly to one of your four legs – but you can’t use power armour or guns.
Instead, you’ll have to rely entirely on your teeth and the assistance of Dogmeat; that’s right, you can still recruit the pooch companion even though you’re a dog yourself.Best Fallout 4 Mods – Classic V.A.T.S.V.A.T.S. – Vault-Tec Assisted Targeting System, in case you didn’t know – has been a massive part of the Fallout series for a while now. With Fallout 4, Bethesda changed things up a little by slowing time rather than stopping it completely, and not all fans were pleased with the alteration.
If you’re one such fan then you can switch to the “classic” V.A.T.S. – as seen in Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas – by installing this mod. With it enabled, time will pause while you pick your targets, rather than slowing to a crawl.Best Fallout 4 Mods – Atom Bomb BabyOne of the more bizarre weapon modifications available for Fallout 4, Atom Bomb Babies is literally what it says on the tin – you fire baby projectiles which explode on contact. Amusing and rather unsettling in equal measures, it might not strictly be an essential mod, but it’s so strange to see in action you’ll have to try it out at least once.(apester:56c44e23b6c51fb652dbc50b)What’s your favourite Fallout 4 mod? Have we missed something off the list?
Let us know in the comments below and we’ll update! Why we’re different.
So for the first ten levels or so I was blissfully content with FO4's performance. It seems very stable. The AI is vastly improved.
NPC's are behaving well. I got a few bugs but, you know, whatever. But the load times have grown longer and longer, despite the game being played on a fairly powerful rig. But the worst thing I'm getting is this HORRIFIC delay when switching weapons. I went into the Four Leaf Fishpacking Plant and encountered a Legendary ghoul. I ran away and zoned back outside. When I finally arrived I switched to my shotgun. It didn't come to hand.
I was stuck, waiting for it, without being able to sprint or run, as I fled from the Legendary ghoul and his four friends (who materialized out of thin air). I was 'rescued' by a run in with a band of raiders ambushing a scavenger. At the South Boston Police Dept, which is nearly five blocks away. As I ducked around a building the game finally relented and allowed me to have my shotgun. Which I no longer needed.Folks have said that switching weapons in the pip boy doesn't have the same problem. I'm getting it no matter what I do and I'm tempted to stop playing FO4 until it's fixed.sigh.At least there are no backward flying supermutants.Posts: 3362 Joined: Sun Nov 19, 2006 9:58 am.
I have this issue when I use hotkeys to change weapons. I'll switch from one to the other and it just takes an insanely long time to come out. I've been in situations with a deathclaw running at me and basically left defenseless because of this lolIt's hardly a fix, but I've found that sometimes scrolling out to third person, back to first person, out to third person again, and back to first person again will cause it to come out. The first time I scroll out and back my hands come up in the proper position but with no visible. The second time the whole animation of actually pulling the gun out will trigger and I'll have the gun.I can bring up a little on-screen menu of my hotkeyed gear (F key on PC, I don't know about consoles) and if I manually select the guns here this issue doesn't seem to occur. A lot of the time when this happens, I'll have a similar problem with my Pip-boy not appearing. I'll go through the animation of moving my arm up, but I just see nothing there.Posts: 3414 Joined: Sun Aug 12, 2007 11:53 am.
Sometimes the game can use up to 30 seconds swapping weapons for reasons, other times its just the animation, no its not about loading the model, i can use gause switch to assault rifle then back to gaus 10 seconds later while standing still and it hangs. Accessing the pipboy tend to solve it, at least it freeze time if you get shot at.Load times are longer as its more textures and models and they are larger, cells are larger too.On consoles this is negotiated some with more memory let them cache and preload more stuff.
For pc its noticeable longer as we might have to load 4 times as much data than in Skyrim but the hard drive is not faster.Posts: 3455 Joined: Wed Aug 09, 2006 10:00 am. Oof, I feel ya on those weapon-swap delays. Very uncool to have suiciders closing in on you while you've got your thumb up your ass.I've taken to turning on God Mode (tgm) for the same approx time as the weapon sticks - still isn't great because enemies are closing in and find me, but if they get to be immune to my bullets for ass-pull reasons then so do I.As for load-times, are you PC and using mods? Changing Fallout.ini to have the long STRINGS/, MUSIC/, etc after it was ultimately detrimental, and you get the same effect with less load pain by clearing it (just delete everything after the = but leave the field itself).Posts: 3423 Joined: Tue Aug 22, 2006 10:41 am.
Better 'Loads' Ammo Switchers!I just wanted to say thank you to for an absolutely amazing, must have mod,.Also, if you like either mod please endorse them, it helps other people find them too:).Better Loads Switchers (BLS) is really small but really cool mod. After a playthrough with Loads, I can't imagine another without it. If you have used it with By and/or by then you know what I'm talking about. There was one problem though. Those DAMN ammo switchers. They were slow, they didn't give you good feedback as to the problem and more importantly they could just stop working!
If that happened it was the worst, say goodbye to that gun or ammo switching on that gun. This mod fixes all of those problems. After a short loading time on a gun, the switches can be used to swap between calibers almost instantly (just not if you double press, if you do the cache may still be loading) until you switch to a new gun. With this mod you also get better feedback to the problem and it will actually FIX any 'broken' guns that can't hotswap. I was able to reverse engineer the script and make them more stable and add better error messages.I was able to maintain the Original Loads's backend, while adding an optimization to the code allowing the switches to operate much faster.
They work using a caching system that caches needed ammo info for special caliber (e.g. AP, EXP, IR, INC) swapping.
The original programming performed expensive lookup operations every time you tried to swap. I observed anywhere from 3 to 6 seconds until the ammo was swapped. The new Switches load the cache whenever the weapon caliber changes (I.E. You change guns, or change the caliber receiver type) and AFTER you swap to another special caliber. What that means is that as long as you stay on the same gun you can swap special types very quickly. And whenever you switch weapons you'll have to wait for the cache to load the first request to swap to a special type.
I think this is kinda cool actually, makes it fun in combat!:)If you like Manufacturing Extended and building awesome factories you should check out my other Mod. It is a much larger, more complete mod than BLS.
It has scrapping machines for Loose Mods, Weapons, Ammo, Armor and new MUST HAVE builders, and SO SO much more. Check it out:)Below is a video comparison of standard loads swirches vs BLS switch.Skip to 1:50 to see BLS in action. Requirements:-Absolute Must Haves:MUST HAVEMUST HAVE installed correctly.Options in installer:Loads OverwriteWeaponsmith Extended PatchWeaponsmith Extended OverwriteCompatibility-Very small mod should have no compatibility issues if you get the standalone version. If you get the overwrite patch just be aware an overwrite is possible.
Does overwrite the Loads's Next and Prev ammo switcher. I doubt anything else modifies those but I guess ya never know.Installation-With NMM (highly recommended):1. I’ll be honest, for a while there, I was totally ignorant to the modding community involved in Fallout 4. As someone who played The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, and Fallout 3 on PC, I understood exactly what dedicated modders could create. Unfortunately, I wanted the latest and greatest on the PlayStation 4. I thought playing with a controller on a shiny console would somehow make the game more enjoyable to me. Boy, was I wrong. I spent 60+ hours on the PS4 version of Fallout 4, then quickly switched to PC, where I modded my game into oblivion and beyond. I’m talking brand-new weapons, enhanced graphics, customized building models, and immersion mods galore.
There was nothing I wouldn’t download at least once. I broke my game, I reinstalled everything, and I visited Nexus Mods again. If you’re new to the modding scene in Bethesda games or perhaps just want to enhance Fallout 4 a tad, these 15 mods are so insane that you cannot miss out on them. Honestly, these mods are so great, we didn't even include the Star Wars mod we used in the header image, though you can find that. Some of the mods mentioned below simply add a unique firearm or tweak the AI a tad.
While others completely reimagine significant aspects of the game – making for a more thrilling experience overall. You would do well to spend an afternoon downloading these mods and enhancing the open-world, post-apocalyptic RPG. Of course, we recommend that you download one mod at a time, then test your game experience before continuing. A single mod could break something in-game and, if you just installed twenty, you’d be hard-pressed to find the culprit. Via: Nexus ModsIf you’re anything like me, you completely ignore the statistics of each piece of armor in the game and instead opt for style over functionality.
That’s completely fine! This is an open-world RPG, after all, which means playing how you want. Unfortunately, Bethesda’s selection of armor, clothing, and armor mods is a bit lacking at the moment. The modding community changed all of that, though. In, a mod by Gambit77, the whole armor and clothing system was revamped completely. You can now wear any piece of regular clothing underneath individual armor pieces, hats and helmets no longer cover the face, allowing for gas masks and bandanas.
And finally, there are new craftable items to wear on the regular. Overall, this is a mod your character needs in their virtual life. Via: Nexus ModsThe settlements and building aspect of Fallout 4 needed some work, sorry to say. While Bethesda certainly nailed the core aspect, they left a lot for the community to desire. In, by NovaCoru, your settlement is no longer a static, boring endeavor that most would consider an afterthought to the main portion of the game.
Instead, the mod adds in over 1,000 new, balanced objects, including cars, working street lamps, and entire build sets based on the infamous Institute. If you enjoy expanding settlements, then more power to you. Why not do so with more items and better placement, though?
Instead of patchwork homes made of tin metal and termite-riddled boards, you can build a bustling community with walkways, barriers, and brick-style homes. The options are endless! Via: Nexus ModsFor the most part, it’s easy to completely ignore the weather in a video game – especially one as immersive and impressive as Fallout 4. Once someone points out the lack of intense rain, thunder, and gloomy fog, you’ll never look at the game the same way twice. Sure, Bethesda’s RPG has a weather system, but it’s lackluster. In, by modder fadingsignal, a slew of new textures and immersive visuals are added into the game, including rain storms, dust storms, sheet lightning, and fork lightning. There are even 20 new thunder sounds.
Fadingsignal went into detail with the sounds. Furthermore, you can even tweak the chance of a Feral Ghoul attack during radiation storms, making them even deadlier overall. Via: Nexus ModsLet’s face it, the NPCs in Fallout 4 are dumb. There’s no skirting around the issue.
These characters have no qualms about walking up to a and fist-fighting. Furthermore, they tend to stand around or work wherever you assign them. Life in post-apocalyptic Boston is pretty tiresome and downright annoying. In, by Thom293, over 230 new settlers are added to the settlement pool, for a total of 270+. You can opt for their vanilla equipment and statistics, or utilize completely lore-friendly equipment, mortality rates, and stats.
This is even possible with the built-in PDF Reader app, so you don’t need any other tools. To do this, simply open a PDF in the built-in Reader app. Swipe up from the bottom or down from the top to access the app bar, tap Save as, and save the PDF — when you save it, the Reader app will include your signature and anything else you’ve written on the document. With a high-quality stylus like the one included with the Surface Pro, you don’t have to use such tricks. Microphone location on surface pro 3. In fact, you can use the Surface Pen to sign PDFs directly on your screen and quickly save your signature to them. Locate the place in the doucment you want to sign and sign it directly on your screen using the Surface Pen.
The choice is yours. In any case, your bustling settlement built with Sim Settlements will look infinitely more impressive with unique NPCs wandering the city streets instead of NPC #221 version 2. Oh, and you can even build a raider settlement!
Via: Nexus ModsThe mod, by mm137, is purely aesthetic, albeit necessary for those tired of the wonky in-game map the game launched with. Consider this a quality of life update for the Sole Survivor.
While the improved map does feature an initial weird purple-pink hue, which can be off-putting (albeit changed to your liking), its functionality is what’s important here.Considered one of the best Fallout 4 mods by PC Gamer, Rock Paper Shotgun, and VG247, Improved Map features distinct waterlines, enhanced roads and train tracks, corrected map marker placement, numbered grid lines, and even regions. Each feature can be tweaked, including brightness and entirely optional features. While you may not see an issue with the current map, switch over to this one, and you’ll immediately notice the difference. Going back is hard!
Via: Nexus ModsOkay, you don’t need this mod to improve the gameplay whatsoever, but it’s still interesting to have. Consider this one of those “quality of life” immersion-type mods that simply add on to the game in a small way., by lesma666, simply helps the player put their gun down occasionally.
After all, it must be tiring holding an assault rifle at full attention for extended periods. Personally, I hate how the player character points their gun forward at all times. It breaks the immersion of the game, which is astounding to begin with. With Lowered Weapons, you’ll notice a new animation while in the first-person perspective. Now, with the mod installed, your character will rest their weapon, pointing the barrel towards the ground, when not in use.
It’s more immersive and enjoyable this way. Via: Nexus ModsIf you’re a veteran of the Fallout franchise, then you already know the in-game music is simply fantastic. Because of this post-apocalyptic video game series, there are more classic music fans in the world than ever before. Like anything good, we always want more, though!, by OldManMose76, features 111 lore-friendly, thematically correct songs to Diamond City Radio.
DCR is the only worthwhile radio station to listen to in the Commonwealth, so it’s nice to have some more variety available. Of course, the mod also removes DJ Travis’ introductions and segues.
Otherwise, Travis would say one song is coming on, then play something entirely different. It would be immersion-breaking. You’ll have to play for quite a long time before listening to all 111 new songs, though, so prepare yourself for a long weekend! Via: Nexus ModsDo you remember Dogmeat? He was everyone’s favorite canine companion – albeit for a short while.
Upon acquiring your unique pal in the early game, it’s common to ditch him and opt for someone stronger and more efficient. Leaving Dogmeat behind always tugs at the heart-strings, though, doesn’t it?In, from Valdacil, you can now bring Dogmeat on your adventures in addition to a human (or otherwise) companion. Initially, you could only have one or the other, despite Dogmeat not being treated as a full companion.
There is evidence of this within the game files. For example, Dogmeat doesn’t disable the Lone Wanderer perk. That’s not an issue any longer, though. So, go ahead and bring Hancock and Dogmeat to clean out the Parkview Apartments.
Having an actual RPG party for once is nice! Via: Nexus ModsYeah, this is the apocalypse, we know! What ever happened to the seasons, though? Humanity has survived 200 years since the bombs first dropped. You would think a bit of snow, spring showers, or falling leaves would be a possibility. In Bethesda’s world, however, that’s unlikely. They prefer dark and drab. The players, however, don’t.
In, by GameDuchess, adds in Fall, Winter, Spring, and Summer to the game. Each particular season has its own unique textures and vibe. During winter, you’ll obviously notice a bit of snow covering the ground.
During summer, however, the world is less green and includes fewer flowers. It’s the perfect crop harvesting season. If you’re anything like me, the colorful aesthetic of spring pairs nicely with raider blood splashed across the ground. Via: Nexus ModsIf you haven’t noticed, improving the settlement-building features of Fallout 4 is something of a theme with the modding community. Bethesda did well, but there is always room for improvement.
In this case, it’s the ability to build a new settlement anywhere in the game world. In, by Chesko, you may now create a small campsite to cook, sleep, and refresh yourself while on an adventure. Furthermore, by constructing a new workbench, you can turn your small campsite into a bustling settlement, complete with the benefits and work included. As of right now, the mod allows for ten additional settlements to be built within the game world. Still, that’s ten more settlements to expand, trade with, and gather resources at. The mod doesn’t break immersion either, as it uses in-game assets and you may only build in areas with enough room. Via: Nexus ModsDo you want to turn your pipe pistol into a blunderbuss?
How about a railway rifle with a triple barrel and a scope attachment? Fallout 4 already has an extensive weapon modding system – far better than what we witnessed in Fallout: New Vegas. However, it has limitations. Limitations we simply cannot work with under these conditions., by LucasGod, effectively opens the weapon modding system completely. You can now equip any weapon modification to any weapon in the game. Some of the creations people have made are downright wacky, but still pretty dang cool to witness in action. It’s nothing to suppress a.44 revolver, equip an extended barrel, and turn said revolver into a rifle.
While it may not be fully immersive to the game world, it’s still fun and that’s the point of the game! Via: Nexus ModsThere are a few standout quests in Fallout 4 that every player remembers. Then there are those we would rather forget. Everyone can agree, however, that we need more quests to fill out the game world. That is the precise goal of Fusion City Rising, by Recluse and Thuggysmurf.is a unique quest mod that features 10 to 20 hours of additional content.
There are new quests, new locations, new factions, and even new companions to recruit. Fusion City, itself, is a massive underground complex that is bigger than Diamond City, complete with a mall, subway system, hotel, player home, bank, shooting range, and every type of vendor imaginable. It’s massive, pure and simple. When you’re not fighting the new enemy factors or completing side-quests, you’ll want to simply explore the huge game world added to the wasteland.
Via: Nexus ModsPlayers understood the narrative of the Minutemen, sure, but they didn’t quite grasp the concept in-game. It’s clear that Bethesda wanted this unique, player-run faction to be the most efficient alternative to rebuilding the Commonwealth. By acquiring more settlements, you thus gain new sources of revenue and resources. Unfortunately, the faction suffered from lackluster implementation., by TheFirstEnd, is designed to expand upon the faction, making them more attractive, immersive, and useful to the game world. You’ll notice Minutemen reinforcements, Veteran Minutemen equipped with Gauss weaponry, new armors, and an overall stronger faction worthy of defending the common settler. In the vanilla game, the Brotherhood of Steel and Institute were more attractive choices to side with. With We Are the Minutemen, the militia is worthy of your time and attention.
Via: Nexus ModsThe community, for the most part, absolutely adored the pipe weapons that took center-stage in Fallout 4. They were immersive, somewhat realistic, and exciting to mod in the late-game.
Unfortunately, they kind of dominated the wasteland. Almost every raider in the game armed themselves with some type of pipe weapon. It grew tiresome. We want some variety, Bethesda! Thus, the, by modders FX0x01, Haru, Navaro, Lee Swagger, and others, was introduced.
The assault rifle features new, high-quality textures, custom animations and sounds, extensive customization options, and is in leveled lists. Leveled lists? What does that mean? Basically, until you hit level 25, the RU556 won’t spawn in the game.
It’s a high-powered assault rifle, after all. Via: Nexus ModsWhile I personally enjoy building a post-apocalyptic settlement, the feature introduced in Fallout 4 was a bit tedious, to say the least. You're tasked with rescuing settlements, seeing to their every need, and then growing from one shack to two. If there were no existing structures in the immediate area, you oversaw the construction from scratch. Snooze! In, from modder kinggath, you simply set down designated plots of land, including residential, agricultural, and retail. Your residents could then be assigned their very own plot, where they would construct their very own domiciles.
There is enough variety in the buildings to offer a real sense of a settlement. Of course, you’re still in charge of basic needs, including water, food, and defense. In any case, instead of the NPC being lazy, you get to be lazy!

When a Supermutant is charging you with a nuke is very handy. You can cripple his leg, or aim for the arm with the mini-nuke.The Vault-Tec Asssited Targeting System, or V.A.T.S., allows Fallout 4 players to slow time and target specific enemy body parts. The amount one can use this feature is based on.
AP are raised by having a higher agility rating (+10 per point), and armor mods that increase AP. In this guide to VATS, we'll cover usage of the system, and get into weapon types and modifications and how they affect the AP Cost of each shot in VATS. Basics When multiple opponents are rushing you, the ability to slow time is invaluable. Your Max AP, Weapon type, and Modifications you've made to that weapon determine the AP cost per shot.About V.A.T.S.Playstation 4 and Xbox One users both press the L1 (or LB) button to go into V.A.T.S., while PC players press 'Q' (this can be changed).
While in V.A.T.S., time seems to slow to about 5% of normal, meaning you're not invulnerable but not going to get hit as often while you seek targets. You are able to select different body parts to attack while in VATS, and when done the character will fire off the string of shots. While in V.A.T.S., you can select to aim for head shots - which typically do double damage on humanoids, though various enemies have different weak points (Deathclaws' is the belly, but it's hard to hit).
These are good for fast kills, but sometimes it's better to cripple a limb in a longer fight. For weaker monsters, you'll often kill them before you can cripple a limb, but enemies with high life may have limbs weaker than their total health pool.Players executing moves in VATS take 95% reduced damage, so higher agility builds will be able to make up for possible weakness by spending more time using this mode of combat.
Those who have will be able to use VATS 25/50% more often than those who do not use those Perks. This is only after you've hit the execute button and can be seen when you fire a fat man at a nearby target, as you should benefit from the reduction. The damage resistance that VATS provides is huge, so VATS builds have definite strengths and also allow players who are not good at shooters to excel at Fallout 4 despite its heavy gunplay.Melee and VATSMelee players still benefit from VATS due to the fact that it's the only way they can benefit from critical hits, while also giving them time to queue up attacks on multiple opponents with the slowed time benefit allowing them to perform superhuman feats, so long as targets are in range. With the Blitz Perk, this becomes less of an issue.
Sneaky characters would be especially foolish to pass up VATS usage, because you can crit on a sneak attack along with Agility's Blitz Perk, which will let you deal even more damage - with Blitz that base damage gets multiplied by the distance, then sneak attack and crit bonuses for massive damage. Yeah - I love that Perk and have to recommend it even out of context. Blitz is almost essential for melee users, very hard to pass up that amp'd damage and VATS distance, allowing you to close gaps instantly. Critical Hits are used in V.A.T.S.
And only gained by hits in this mode. The rate the meter fills is based on luck.Critical HitsCritical Hits are now used solely in V.A.T.S. And are controlled by the player. As your critical meter builds, you're able to use the shot at will by pressing the jump button just before the shot is taken in VATS. With, you can store more than one Critical Hit. At 10 luck, you can expect it to take about 5 hits to build the meter to full. The rate the meter builds is based on the character's luck and certain unique bonuses that can be found on weapons.
The amount of damage a weapon will do on a critical hit is based upon the weapon type - sniper rifles will do more crit damage than a pipe pistol. Crippling limbs can come in handy during big fights, in order to weaken one of your opponents. It's also helpful when you're up against one enemy that is much stronger than you. Otherwise, enemies will die before limbs are crippled.Crippling LimbsDifferent parts of the body being crippled have different effects on various creatures. The below list is for a human, there are many creatures in the wasteland. A Radscorpion's tail being crippled may prevent it from stinging you, a Deathclaw cannot perform its leap attack with a crippled leg.
Enemies that are melee in general will have a harder time reaching you with crippled legs. Crippled heads won't have a noticeable impact on many enemies, it's just for more damage. On many enemies, it may impact Perception and allow you to slip away when sneaking.
Note that if the bar is depleted, the limb is already crippled. Most enemies will display an animation when this happens. You may want to switch to another, or else fire as you were and reduce their HP to kill them. Crippled Head - Rarely happens, but should impact perception and reduce aim of ranged opponents.
Additionally, it will let you sneak away easier if you've reason to do so. Crippled Armos - A crippled arm will reduce aim, for sure. Enemies may have an arm completely taken off, which obviously affects them in a very negative way. Crippled Leg - Reduced movement speed, and sometimes humanoids who lose legs can only lie there and await their death. For a big enemy like a deathclaw, you're not likely to see this happen but rather experience it continually limping toward you.For the player, a Stimpak will heal a crippled limb. VATS, Weapon Modifications, and AP Cost per Shot Weapon Type is a big factor in AP usage, but so too are the mods you place on it. Costs can be cut to 1/2 of normal if you modify it correctly.
Sometimes, you DO want a weapon with high AP cost and range, though. This is great for repeat sneak attacks when you've invested points into sneaking. While I don't have an easy way to get exact numbers on AP from a single shot, I have some good observations for you that may impact your decision-making when modifying weapons. If you're a heavy V.A.T.S. User, with plenty of Agility and Perception, you can certainly benefit from this information. Certain parts of a weapon will greatly impact its AP usage. First - Rate of Fire is a big indicator of how many shots you can get off in VATS, although it's not the be-all-end-all.
For automatic weapons, rate of fire will increase the amount of bullets/lasers per burst, while on a normal gun it is for single shots. The higher, the better, in most cases. The Weapon Type plays the single biggest role on AP cost, but we can reduce this AP cost - sometimes at the expense of other stats, particularly range/accuracy in a number of ways. You usually do not have to sacrifice damage, just your chance to hit from large ranges. Receivers - Receivers can greatly impact the rate of fire, a receiver that is not automatic yet says it increases the rate of fire, light, or has a hair trigger, is going to let you reduce AP cost in VATS.
Changing to automatic, your weapon will consume more AP but fire in bursts at a cost of reduced accuracy and range. I generally prefer powerful single shots, because these conserve ammo, but that is entirely up to you. The higher a weapon's rate of fire the more mods like hair trigger are going to boost its rate of fire. For a slower weapon, it's not a great impact on the number of shots in one round of V.A.T.S. Mods that say heavy or increase damage, aside from the really advanced ones, raise AP cost.
You need high Gun Nut or Science to make a weapon do high damage AND be low AP. Barrel - Shorter barrels lower AP cost in VATS, for whatever reason. If you're using a combat rifle up close a lot, then consider switching to a short light or short ported barrel as opposed to the normal short barrel because these will improve your own accuracy by reducing recoil when firing the weapon manually. Longer barrels increase the effective range of a weapon, allowing you to hit targets further. Outside that range, even high perception won't help - I consider range to be more important than accuracy, and a long barrel doesn't hurt AP cost as much as a scope. My testing showed that from the same spot, having a higher range and lower accuracy was better, and I got 2 more shots in VATS - so if you must go for range but want the most hits, go for the long barrel!. Stock - Some weapons can go from pistol to rifle by changing the stock, although this is a bit rare and generally for some energy weapons (laser rifle/pistol).
A shorter stock reduces AP usage in VATS, but gives you more recoil (harder to aim subsequent shots) with the weapon when firing manually. This makes sense from an AP usage perspective - if the stock is long, the character is going to use it, shoulder it, and fire. A short stock is going to be lighter and faster to shoulder and aim. Notably, a shorter stock WILL NOT change your hit rate in VATS, but reduces the AP cost to fire - so it should be the first thing to go if you would like to get an extra shot out of your sniper rifle.
Now, for handguns, marksman's grip is going to give you a slightly lower AP cost - maybe not enough to make an extra shot, but your meter will not be fully depleted so you can take your next much sooner. Magazine - This has no effect on VATS AP usage as far as shots you can make at full, although a slow reload/high cap weapon is going to be reloaded in VATS and take more points to do so. Faster reload will use less. Having a higher capacity and faster reload usually has to be balanced, until you get to the high level mods that do both. Normally, I'd prefer a higher capacity because I can reload during downtime or repositioning, and later get the combo effect. Sights and Scopes - Having a normal sight is a big no-no.
Presumably, it takes your character longer to aim, so increases the AP cost by a little bit. A reflex sight is going to reduce the AP cost to fire the weapon in VATS. Now, with regard to scopes, they pretty much double AP usage if you use a long scope but greatly increase accuracy, which is used along with line of sight and range in VATS to determine hit rate. Medium and short scopes have smaller increases to AP usage, so consider using these instead if you've got high Perception. For people who like to tweak, you might find you have 3 shots with some left over with a short scope. You could get a bit more accuracy by switching to a medium scope while still being able to take 3 initial sniper shots.
Muzzles - Muzzles do not impact the AP cost of shots in VATS, even on energy weapons. These are for your use when aiming manually, although some might impact accuracy at the reduction of range. Bayonets are junk, but muzzle brakes and compensators may come in handy if you fire your weapon manually a lot.
This is going to keep your aim on target without the weapon drifting upward so much (recoil). Your manual aim will be better, though you'll sacrifice a little bit of accuracy in VATS.The maximum number of shots that can be fired in VATS is 16 - if you reach this cap, you'll have AP left over to do it again rather soon.Mod Those Weapons!I did a lot of testing to come up with this info, so I hope it's helpful to some of you when it comes time to tweak your weapons. For me, this means an extra shot out of my sniper rifle in VATS by reducing the size of the stock and changing the scope to small. A scope-less sniper rifle becomes a hunting rifle, but it's just a name. I have high Perception, so the scope size reduction doesn't hurt me much. I hate aiming manually with scopes, and would rather use the AP in VATS rather than holding my breath - but your accuracy is sometimes higher than that of VATS if you're good with controls.
Regardless, knowing how these things affect AP usage in VATS may help you test and tweak your weapons so that you can get maximum efficiency out of them.Example Articles for Tuning Weapons:I've started a series on tuning weapons for AP usage in VATS, or else to make them good without VATS in mind.
